Google Gemini Surges Past Perplexity in Referral Traffic

Traffic Trends Shift Dramatically

Recent data from SE Ranking reveals that Google Gemini has significantly increased its referral traffic, surpassing Perplexity for the first time. Between November 2025 and January 2026, Gemini reported a 115% increase in traffic, with December seeing a 51% boost and January following up with a 42% rise. This surge correlates closely with the rollout of Gemini 3, initiated in mid-November.

In stark contrast, Perplexity, which had dominated traffic referrals five months prior—sending nearly three times more traffic than Gemini—now trails behind. As of January 2026, Gemini sent 29% more visitors globally compared to Perplexity, and the gap widened to 41% in the U.S. The data suggests a rapid shift in user engagement, driven by Google‘s enhanced AI capabilities.

Gemini 3: The Catalyst for Growth

The launch of the Gemini 3 models appears to be the pivotal factor in this traffic increase. Google released three iterations: Gemini 3 Pro on November 18, Deep Think on December 4, and Flash on December 17, with Flash becoming the default model in AI Mode for Search. This release marked a dramatic shift from Gemini’s previous flat growth of about 4% per month from January to October.

Following the rollout, SE Ranking reported a staggering 12x acceleration in growth, with monthly increases jumping to 47% in December and January. Such a leap raises questions about the sustainability of this traffic influx and whether it will continue beyond the initial post-launch enthusiasm.

Implications for the AI Referral Traffic Landscape

Despite the impressive growth, AI referral traffic remains a minor player in the larger web traffic pool. According to SE Ranking, AI platforms collectively accounted for just 0.24% of global internet traffic as of January, a marginal increase from 0.15% in 2025. While Gemini’s rise narrows the gap with ChatGPT, which still commands around 80% of AI referral traffic, the overall share of AI in web traffic remains negligible.

Publishers should scrutinize their Google Analytics data for indications of Gemini’s increasing role in referral traffic. As Gemini takes the lead over Perplexity, those relying on specialized AI search tools may need to re-evaluate their strategies, shifting focus toward Google’s broader ecosystem integrations.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Gemini and Perplexity?

Google has not publicly disclosed specific traffic figures for Gemini or AI Mode, making it difficult to predict future trends. However, SE Ranking plans to continue monitoring AI referral traffic throughout 2026. The next update from Similarweb could provide further insights into whether Gemini’s growth trajectory remains on course.

As the AI referral traffic landscape evolves, it is crucial for SEO professionals and content marketers to keep a keen eye on these developments. The potential for increased visibility through enhanced AI tools like Gemini could reshape traffic acquisition strategies moving forward.
