Google upgrades AI Overviews with Gemini 3 Pro for complex queries

Google’s Gemini 3 Pro: a New Angle on Complex Query Handling

Introduction of Gemini 3 Pro

Google has integrated its latest AI model, Gemini 3 Pro, into the AI Overviews feature within Search. This upgrade automatically directs complex queries to this advanced model while simpler queries continue to be processed by faster, less capable models. Robby Stein, a product manager at Google, confirmed that the feature is now available globally in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, which raises questions about accessibility and pricing structures for businesses relying on this technology.

Capabilities of Gemini 3 Pro

Gemini 3 Pro boasts a 1 million token context window, allowing it to process extensive datasets—text, audio, images, and more. This model excels in high-level reasoning and complex instruction following, achieving impressive benchmark scores: 81% on MMMU-Pro, 87.6% on Video-MMMU, and 72.1% on SimpleQA Verified. New features like adjustable thinking levels and multimodal function responses aim to enhance user interaction, but they raise concerns about the underlying costs associated with such advanced capabilities.

Subscription Model Implications

Access to Gemini 3 Pro necessitates a subscription to Google AI Pro or Ultra, which offers differing levels of service. The Pro model provides up to 20 audio overviews daily and 5 Deep Research reports monthly, while the Ultra tier includes additional features like priority access to new functionalities. This tiered pricing strategy raises questions about who benefits from these subscriptions and whether the increased costs will deliver proportional value to users.

Evolution of AI Overviews

Initially, AI Overviews served as generative search answers. The integration of intelligent routing, previously limited to AI Mode, now enhances AI Overviews, enabling them to tackle more complex tasks. This shift addresses the need for nuanced responses in scenarios requiring multi-step reasoning or multimodal analysis. However, the fundamental question remains: will users now have to rely on increasingly complex subscription tiers for basic functionalities?

Challenges and Reliability Concerns

Despite the improvements, AI Overviews have faced substantial criticism for generating “hallucinations,” or confidently incorrect answers. Studies indicate that AI chatbots are now twice as likely to disseminate false information compared to previous years. While the Gemini 3 Pro model aims to mitigate these errors, it does not guarantee complete accuracy. The need for rigorous verification processes persists, especially given that only 1% of users reportedly click on source citations.

What to Expect in the Next Year

Over the next 6 to 12 months, we can expect Google to refine Gemini 3 Pro further, likely introducing incremental updates that address current limitations. However, the reliance on subscriptions for access to advanced features may alienate smaller businesses that cannot justify the cost. As companies adapt to these changes, the conversation around AI reliability and cost-effectiveness will only intensify.
