Google’s Review Purge: a Closer Look at the Deletion Crisis

Recent Surge in Review Deletions

In February 2025, businesses globally faced a staggering wave of review deletions from Google Business Profiles and associated platforms. Starting on February 6, reports indicated that some businesses lost between 10 to 50 reviews overnight, with some experiencing losses as high as 200 reviews within a week. Analysis of nearly 5 million reviews across 78 countries confirmed the scale of this issue, with individual businesses reporting significant drops—one went from 2,467 reviews to 2,399 almost instantly. This crisis peaked at the end of Q1 2025, leading many to question Google’s review management systems.

Technical Discrepancies: Display Issues vs. Actual Deletions

Notably, the disappearance of reviews was not entirely a case of deletions. A significant distinction surfaced: the reviews were not removed from Google’s backend systems but rather suffered from a display issue. Google’s representatives acknowledged this as a known bug affecting Business Profiles globally. Technical analysis confirmed that many reviews still existed in Google’s databases but failed to display correctly to users. For instance, discrepancies in review counts emerged between Google Ads and Business Profiles, indicating a malfunction rather than a complete deletion.

Patterns of Review Removal

Google’s review moderation policies also played a significant role in the crisis. Research revealed that a staggering 73.1% of deleted reviews were 5-star ratings, indicating that positive feedback faces disproportionate scrutiny. Furthermore, 66.1% of removed reviews had no business replies, suggesting that active engagement could help preserve them. Google’s guidelines outline various triggers for review removals, including spam, duplicate content, and reviews from employees or unrelated locations. The removal process appears to be a combination of automated AI systems and manual moderation sweeps, with businesses often receiving generic responses to their appeals regarding removed reviews.

Impact on Businesses and Consumer Trust

The fallout from this deletion crisis has profound implications for local businesses. With 92% of consumers selecting local businesses based on star ratings, losing reviews directly undermines visibility and trust. Small businesses particularly feel the strain, often struggling to recover lost reviews and facing inadequate support from Google. This situation creates a cycle of frustration, as efforts to build positive reputations seem futile when reviews vanish without explanation. The ongoing lack of clear communication from Google further complicates matters, leaving business owners questioning the reliability of the review system.

Speculations on Causes

Several theories have emerged regarding the causes behind this review deletion crisis. A prevailing hypothesis is that Google’s AI moderation systems aggressively target fake or spam reviews, potentially resulting in the accidental removal of legitimate feedback. Some reports indicate that Google might have purged reviews from inactive accounts, exacerbating the situation. The swift and extensive nature of the removals suggests an automated process rather than a manual review, raising questions about the balance between enforcing policy and ensuring legitimate reviews are protected. The line between intentional policy enforcement and unintentional system errors remains blurred.

Looking Ahead

Over the next 6 to 12 months, businesses should prepare for potential continued fluctuations in review visibility. As Google attempts to rectify these issues, further updates may lead to additional review deletions or display inconsistencies. It’s essential for businesses to stay proactive, engaging with their reviews and monitoring their Google profiles closely to mitigate the impact of these systemic issues. As Google’s systems evolve, the question remains: can small businesses rely on Google’s review platform as a stable foundation for their online presence?
